Technical data Nitrogen, preparation and propertiesArticle no: P7153800 Principle Nitrogen as a major component of air can be obtained from it by removing the oxygen. In this experiment an air stream is passed over heated steel wool and passed into a pneumatic pan. This so "produced" nitrogen is examined for its characteristic properties which identifies Nitrogen. Nitrogen smothers combustion and must have a lower density than air, because nitrogen escapes upwards out of the open test tube and not downwardly.
