Principle

In this experiment, a model of a zinc/oxygen cell is constructed in which the mode of functioning of an energy storage unit can be recognized. The zinc/oxygen cell is, like the lead accumulator, a secondary element. In other words, it must first be subjected to a charging process before it becomes a galvanic cell which can supply current for a time and then be charged up again. The electrolyte in this cell is strongly alkaline, the oxidizing agent during the supply of current is oxygen. Technical versions of such cells are so constructed that atmospheric oxygen can be utilized as oxidizing agent.
