Principle

There are substances that change color on contact with water and can be used as a detection reagent for water. The property of these materials is based on that these salts contain crystallization water and (by heating) this water is removed. This removement of water leads to a change of the color of the salts. The colour alteration on adding the water of crystallisation can be used as a test for water. In this experiment a water-detection reagent ("copper sulfate") is prepared and the experiment shows that anhydrous copper sulfate is white and turns blue on contact with water.
